Finca Sophenia Malbec Altosur Gualtallary 2021 - Last Bottle

Finca Sophenia Malbec Altosur Gualtallary 2021

WOW! Don’t sleep on this...97 POINTS, at a planet-rocking price...so stoked to have gotten this back...just deliriously, so incredibly happy… ok, here it goes!

Only FIFTEEN DOLLARS!?! Great, googly-moogly, YES! So good! Finca Sophenia from rockstar consultant Matias Michelini – so intense, so soul-satisfyingly complex...and let’s just go ahead and say it...crazy CHEAP!

The 2021 Sophenia Altosur malbec is grown on estate vineyards at the highest point in the Uco Valley – a place known at “ Gualtallary” that the blabbermouths at Decanter outed as a region “arguably producing Argentina’s finest Malbecs.” (Just kidding, Decanter...we love you.) Well above 3,500 feet, where farming is a passion that yields as much anger, frustration, and disappointment as it does actual grapes – this is a SHOWSTOPPER!

If intellectual, spicy, finely-tuned, and stark-raving delicious is your bag – this is it! It’s certainly our bag – we bought every bottle we could! Just...EPIC! This is a floral and savory expression of high altitude, high octane malbec...leaping from the glass with alpine flowers of lilac and violet before things get dark – beefy and berry driven. Smoky peppercorn, cigar box, Madagascar vanilla, cocoa powder, and oodles of all things crushed berries – blackberries, raspberries, red currants, cherries, and plums...WOW! A minerally minty freshness carries the day to a long and complicated finish…we already said 97 POINTS, right? Grab at least two…CASES! SCORES like these at $15 price tags tend to vanish, so, as ever, WHILE IT LASTS!!!

Gualtallary is a district located in the department of Tupungato in the Uco Valley, Mendoza. Tupungato has an ideal microclimate for the slow ripening of the grapes, with a thermal amplitude that allows reaching a great concentration of aromas and flavors. In turn, the small terroir of Gualtallary gives its wines one of the most unique profiles of Argentina distinguishing them as some of the freshest and most mineral in the country. The combination of height, cold weather, and sandy and stony soils results in an ideal natural acidity that gives intense and elegant wines that stand out for their good structure and unique tannic texture.
