Sorry for the exclamation abuse. Had to. I’m just so PSYCHED about this one! From a slew of vintages that garnered 14 out of a possible 15 STARS from the prestigious Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino (which almost NEVER happens!) 93, 92, 93 POINT vertical from the EVER-AMAZING Croce di Mezzo to boot, and simply...glorious to drink. Tucked between two legendary Brunello properties, BIONDI SANTI and FATTORIA BARBI, lies Croce di Mezzo (a true agriturismo too; you can rent rooms on the farm and eat some amazing home-cooked food...I’m sooooo there). The wines are utterly classic expressions of Brunello’s best terroir, a touch old-school, and outrageously good for the money (Biondi Santi just next door is TEN TIMES the price...)! But THIS! Normally $80 a bottle EASILY – I’m talking LESS than $38 a bottle today. CRAZY!
Veni, vidi, vici, INDEED!
Two bottles each, straight from the winery, the completely glorious 2015, 2016, and 2017 vintages, respectively. I can’t pick a favorite!!!! Do I go with the all-time great 2016 vintage? Or how about the revered 2015? The 2017 has that friendly curbside appeal...HELP! They are all so good, three glasses on my desk and I only have two hands!!! The oh-so-fresh cherries, the kirsch, raspberry, meaty, savory, cigar box flavors, the blood orange zip, the earthy cacao note, and dried rose petals – don't ever STOP! It’s just ravishing, and with a little air, every glass gets even better! It’s all about the fruit, earth, and spice and less about the flashy new oak that dominates more modern Brunellos (so much the better in this humble scribe’s opinion). As if this wasn't collectible enough...the Vannoni-Nannetti family sold a few months back – this truly might be the end of an era! So – to summarize, you need this, you want it, but best to move quickly considering our INSANE price, only so many of these crazy-rare vertical 6-packs are to be had...it WILL NOT BE ENOUGH!!!

Within the confines of Montalcino and its surrounding hills, certain names bring a heightened sense of appreciation - Biondi Santi, Banfi, Fattoria dei Barbi.
Croce di Mezzo is tucked away on the road from Montalcino to Castelnove d’Abate, hidden between Biondi Santi and Fattoria dei Barbi. Despite being sandwiched between two of the area's most famous vineyards, most people haven't heard of Croce di Mezzo. Still, they share the same elevation and vineyard composition, receive the same amount of rainfall, harvest at the same time and make Brunello by the same standards as their more famous neighbors. The one big difference is the price, which represents a killer value compared to the more famous labels flanking their estate.
