University California Davis owns a vineyard literally smack in the middle of To-Kalon (click for the cool zoomable map) and just in front of one of Robert Mondavi Winery’s MOST cherished, prized blocks of To-Kalon. It dates back 50 years or so and is a research and learning outpost. Cornerstone is one of the very few who make a vineyard-designated wine from this hallowed ground and it usually sells out in record time...so getting a chunk of this to sell is pick-the-jaw-off-the-floor amazing. At this price???? Interestingly, lauded winemaker Charles Thomas (along with the talented Kari Auringer) actually made the Mondavi Reserves for many years (from To-Kalon) before moving on to Cardinale, Lokoya, and Verite, to name a few!
The wine ---- in the lush, concentrated and finely tuned ‘16 vintage is fantastic. Deeply colored, grapey, chocolate-covered-maraschino-cherry, red currant jam and fig notes, with a rich, sweet mouthcoating texture and a baker's chocolate finish...oh baby! About The Producer
In 1991 Mike Dragutsky was touched by the dream to make great wine and founded Cornerstone Cellars. When Kari became winemaker for Cornerstone Cellars she was, in fact, coming home. For most of the vintages of the 2000s, Kari was assistant winemaker to Celia Welch who made the wines of Cornerstone Cellars from 2000 through 2007. Kari's fingerprint is already on almost a decade of Cornerstone Cellars wines. Kari puts it best when she says, "I am thrilled to be part of the team at Cornerstone Cellars. We are committed to producing great wines from great vineyards, and making the kind of wines that we want to drink, wines that are a reflection of the vineyard, the vintage and the variety."
