Chateau Mont Thabor Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2018 - Last Bottle

Chateau Mont Thabor Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2018

OH HAPPY DAY! Not only is it Chuck Norris’s birthday and we get to tell absurdly goofball jokes all day ("Chuck Norris once drank wine from a chalice. This chalice is now known as the holy grail."), but MONT THABOR landed! Woooohooo! The fantastic 2018 - a wine of such purity and 80-year-old-vine complexity (and double 92 POINTS!) that it brings a tear to the eye. OVER 60% OFF retail, direct-imported by us with as much as the extraordinary father/daughter Stehelin family team would sell us!! A longtime Last Bottle fave — just a wild wooly wonderful steal…!

Want a simple, don’t-need-to-think-about-it red? DELETE this email then – this is for the thinking, contemplating, pay-attention-to-the-details wine drinker – lord knows you can just joyfully quaff it as well, of course, but MAN! The level of cool savoriness, the sweet Grenache fruit, the melon-twisting spiciness and the crazy-long finish…mmmm! 2018 is a STELLAR vintage in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and you’ll know when it hits your nose! While generally on the “feminine” side of powerful CdP, this has the classic deep and intense nose of raspberry liqueur and crushed rock, with dark blue fruits and that must-have sweet wild herb note --- as it opens, you get violets, licorice, more minerals and kirsch. Hey, don’t take our word for it, read the reviews below! A baby now, it will only get better over the next few years....get enough to cellar!! Wow!! Best Mont Thabor yet?? While it lasts!

** P.S. There’s a bit less this year (good for quality, bad for accountants). Go forth with speed. **

*** P.P.S. “When Chuck Norris enters a room, he doesn’t turn the lights on, he turns the dark off.” ***

This deep ruby & purple Chateauneuf du Pape reveals an expressive nose of candied red fruits. The 2018 vintage has lamb’s lettuce and coated tannins and a fresh and mineral finish.

This is lifted and fresh with spicy aromas of black pepper and nutmeg. It’s lively, defined, and precise on the palate, well balanced, with good textural grain and relief and a fairly long, savory finish. The stems have really worked wonders. Grown mostly on galets roulés in lieux-dits Croix de Bois and Pied Redon, this was fermented mostly in concrete before being matured for 12 months in old barriques and demi-muids.
Lurid ruby. Expressive, smoke-accented cherry, black raspberry, and floral aromas pick up sandalwood and allspice nuances as the wine opens up. Appealingly sweet red and blue fruit, succulent herb, and candied lavender flavors show very good depth as well as energy. Finishes long, spicy and precise, with repeating floral and smooth tannins that add subtle closing grip.

About The Producer

Château Mont-Thabor. The name Mont Thabor was given to the Chateau by a mystic monk, Don Pernety, who was a founder of a Catholic cult and a seeker after the magical "philosopher's stone'. He had brought from Israel's holy Mont Thabor a seedling tree. Once planted, he chose to name the Chateau Mont Thabor. After the agitations of the French Revolution, it all passed from the Church into private hands. In 1840 a certain Mr. Poulain acquired the property and transformed it into a "Relais de Poste'" where the stagecoaches carrying mail and the carriages bearing private citizens could stop for the night to rest. The eccentric and romantic Mr. Poulain was buried on the property and the heart of his mistress was placed in his casket. We presume that his passing was due to the grief caused by the death of his lover.

Chateau Mont Thabor is owned and managed by Daniel Stehlin today. Daniel Stehlin owns more than Mont Thabor.
