Matahiwi Estate Sauvignon Blanc Wairarapa 2018 - Last Bottle

Matahiwi Estate Sauvignon Blanc Wairarapa 2018

DO YOU REMEMBER? That day, last year, when you bought a few of the 94-POINT 2016 Matahiwi we offered, got it, tried and said: “damn, I KNEW I should have bought a case??!!”

Do you?

Yes, this brand-new release has an even bigger score (95 POINTS!!) and it is still ASTOUNDINGLY, lip-lickingly priced at a shocking $12 (that’s American dollars, yes), but most importantly, it is NOT your typical NZ SB. In fact, we were just having this discussion on a plane with a seatmate --- most NZ SB has an intense sour grapefruit, hay and sometimes vegetal note -- NOT TODAY, not this wine. NO, no ...we’re going to get right to the meat on the bone here: this is one of the best New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs we have tasted in years, especially at this price.

This SO brisk, so lively, racy, dry wine screams with the lip-smacking lime-y freshness of a thousand suns, and backs it up with sweet grapefruit, gooseberry, lime sorbet and lemon marmalade to boot. Vibrant, vigorous and simply bubbling over with tangy citrus zingers, we were instantly smitten. Thanks to a generous order on our part, the PRICE is outrageously killer, and then to discover the 95 POINT rating...well… this is a summer quaffing bonanza if we ever saw one!! BUT HURRY --- please!

Matahiwi Estate is located in the very heart of the Wairarapa Valley, one of the finest places on earth for this varietal. You are going to love this stuff ---- get it while you can!! Say it with us! Mata-hiwi!! Woo hoo!

This vibrant and aromatic wine shows lifted aromas of gooseberry, herbs and citrus, with a sustained mineral and lime finish. At its best now and over the next few years.

About The Producer

The moment you step on Wairarapa soil your heart starts to beat to a calmer rhythm, time slows down enough for you to catch your breath, drink in the spectacular scenery that surrounds you and you feel your body start to relax.

Matahiwi Estate is located in the very heart of the Wairarapa and we pride ourselves on being an award-winning family-owned winery. We have adopted an extensive hands-on approach to our wine-making in line with those used by the finest international wine producers whilst utilising the latest developments in technology.

Romeo Bragato, an Italian viticulturist & oenologist, was contracted by New Zealand’s Department of Agriculture in 1895 to advise on planting & pruning vines in New Zealand, from which he reported the ideal growing conditions that the Wairarapa & other regions in New Zealand offered potential grape growers.

French wife of early settler, William Beetham, was so inspired by our region when she left her Burgundian homeland to live in New Zealand,1880s and produced the region’s first Pinot Noir vintage in 1897. Prohibition came into force in the early 1900’s which saw an end to winemaking in the region.

The Phoenix logo - We adopted the mythical sacred firebird, the Phoenix, which has long been seen as a symbol of renewal as our logo. The Matahiwi Phoenix symbolises the rebirth of winemaking in the area for the first time since prohibition.
