Catena Cabernet Sauvignon San Carlos Mendoza Argentina 2014 - Last Bottle

Catena Cabernet Sauvignon San Carlos Mendoza Argentina 2014

Cabernet! There is never enough, it seems...and at $15?! Anybody like Cat Empire?

If I ever found a pot of gold

I'd buy bottles untold of the nectar of the vines

'Cause I'm going to die with a twinkle in my eye

'cause I sung songs, spun stories,

loved, laughed and drank wine

This truly outrageously good-for-the-money high-elevation Argentinian Cabernet from Catena (sort of the Robert Mondavi of Argentina, and a highly regarded producer for over a century) makes this luscious Cabernet, and we desperately wish we could tell how we snagged it for this price...but...ya know…trade secrets and all that…

The San Carlos vineyard sits at 3,960 feet, and while in Napa that might mean a “rugged” wine, this is just SENSUOUS, silky, flavor-packed goodness, with baskets of fresh blackberry, sweet tobacco, caramel and a creamy, ripe texture. Ridiculously easy drinking...in fact, (fills glass), it’s just dandy with this chile verde breakfast burrito…

Not too much to spread around the ol’ USA on this fine Saturday...while it lasts…!

The Catena Cabernet Sauvignon shows a dark ruby color with violet tones. On the nose, itoffers intense aromas of ripe raspberries and cassis with notes of pepper, clove, and a touchof cedar. On the palate, it is full-bodied and rich and displays layers of black currant and blackraspberry with notes of cedar and oregano. This Cabernet Sauvignon is an elegant wine withsilky tannins that provide structure and a long and persistent finish.

About The Producer

Family vintners for over 100 years, the Catenas are recognized for their pioneering role in high-altitude viticulture in Argentina. The Catena wines are a special assemblage of high-altitude estate vineyards made by fourthgeneration vintner, Laura Catena and chief winemaker, Alejandro Vigil. From decades of studyand exploration within Mendoza's high-altitude mountain terroirs, the Catena family has identified special locations for its estate vineyards. The Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of four vineyards. Each vineyard is divided into lots, which are harvested at different times. From the La Pirámide Vineyard in the Agrelo district of Luján de Cuyo come grapes with classic aromas and flavors of black currant and cassis with ripe, sweet tannins. The Domingo Vineyard in the Villa Bastías district of Tupungato contributes grapes with spicy aromatics and peppery noteson the palate. The grapes grown in the Nicasia Vineyard located in Altamira in the La Consultadistrict of San Carlos provide finely grained and sweet tannins to the wine. And the very high-altitude Adrianna Vineyard in the Gualtallary district of Tupungato produces grapes withnotes of eucalyptus, a pronounced minerality, and firm tannins.
