Hendry Blocks 7 & 22 Zinfandel Napa Valley 2014 - Last Bottle

Hendry Blocks 7 & 22 Zinfandel Napa Valley 2014

We ask you: is there a better classic-styled, structured, powerful-but-not-ooey-gooey-jammy Napa Valley Zinfandel in America??

We can debate all day, but HENDRY is right up at the very tip-top (we love Elyse, too, shout out to Ray), and today we are gobsmacked to have scored a small (really small!) parcel of the ROCKING, complex, layered (if it was a band, it might be Rush, for a little musical context…), 93-POINT (!!), Blocks 7 + 22 Zin, all from Estate grapes west of Napa (Block 7 was planted in 1975!). YES! And a SPECTACULAR price, not to be seen again! If you love mountain Zin, Zin that has an almost Cabernet or Bordeaux-like feel to it to complement the zesty, sappy fruit ---- this is it.

MMMMM. The nose is pure fruit leather and spice, even a bit of Kahlua. Rich and spicy, this has ripe red berries, white pepper, and that indefinable “brambly”, walking-uphill-through-the-forest kind of wonderfulness. What IS that? We call it magic. Juicy, piquant, savory and delicious, it’s a fantastic wine to drink with gusto, great food and perhaps the classic “Permanent Waves” blasting in the background (complete album with lyrics here, thanks Dad). Excellent.

Truly AMAZING price for a 93-pointer!! Super limited!

Hendry blocks 7 and 22 are located on benchlands west of the town of Napa. The nine acres are between 230 and 300 feet above sea level and have thin, stony Boomer series soils. The maritime climate is moderated by morning fog and strong afternoon breezes from San Pablo Bay. Block 7 was planted in 1975 to clone 2 Zinfandel. Block 22 was planted in 1995, also to clone 2. The vines are spaced 8’ x 10’, cordon trained and spur pruned. A three-wire trellis system supports the cordon and the canopy.

In 2014, median bloom occurred May 16th and median veraison July 22. Block 22 was harvested on September 3rd and Block 7 on September 8th. Average production in the two blocks averages only 3 tons per acre.

The alcoholic fermentation was completed in approximately ten days in closed stainless steel fermentation tanks. The wine was then pressed and put into barrels for malolactic fermentation. Aging for the 7&22 is fifteen months in French oak barrels, approximately one-third of which are new each vintage.

About The Producer

The Hendry family has been farming the same vineyard in Napa since 1939.  The Hendry Ranch is composed of 203 acres situated in the hills north west of Napa, which include 114 acres of vineyard. This latitude and location in the valley experiences substantial marine influence, and allows us to grow 11 different varietals, each carefully distributed among our many vineyard blocks. All Hendry wines are made from estate grapes. Our wines are crafted to highlight the terroir of the vineyard.

Pairing Suggestions

A whole chicken, roasted with plenty of rosemary, thyme, salt and garlic, would be a delicious pairing with this wine, as would pasta with sundried tomatoes, capers, anchovies and herbs—dishes high on flavor but moderate in fat.
