Bodegas G??mez de Segura Reserva Rioja 2009 - Last Bottle

Bodegas G??mez de Segura Reserva Rioja 2009

Man, we are BUSTIN’ today!! Wow!! 60+% OFF a 91-POINT, perfect-drinking powerhouse Rioja Reserva!! A wine that is nearly impossible to even find in the U.S., but we went to Spain and dug it up, DIRECT from the winery ---- ‘cause that’s what we DO here in Napa! Smashingly good at this astonishing price. Yeah, no, look at it again, that is a wicked deal!

When we tasted this, we assumed it was at LEAST in the $40 range --- it rings with class and complex layers of flavor. THEN we saw the 91-point score and said “we need to buy as much of this as we can”. We did, and got a superb price by bringing it in directly ourselves and cutting out all those middlemen. Everyone wins! Just landed in the warehouse!

There is a delicate, finesse-filled ethereal-ness in this lovely wine --- perfumey spiced red fruits, sweet dark cherry, a hint of something like root beer and woodsmoke, very subtle but penetrating. Medium-bodied, not heavy, just terrifically complex and one of those wines that changes every few minutes. It’s SEXY in your mouth --- the bottle age has turned it into a smoothly humming, balanced beauty. Wow! Seriously getting better with every sip!! CRAZY-GOOD at this price and deserving more than 91 points in our book! While it lasts, that is...don’t miss!

This terrific wine from a small family in Rioja strikes a perfect balance between traditional and modern styles. It swells with an abundance of pure fruit up front and has plenty of secondary nuances of tobacco, coffee, leather and spice rounding out the complexity. The grapes come from the town of La Rioja Alavesa y Laguardia which is quickly becoming a fashionable place for high end producers to buy land. In short, this wine punches way above its weight class!
